Here and There

Jane Crow and Mike Matthews

Here and There

"Here and There" displays the work of artists Michael Matthews and Jane Crow, whose meanderings, travels and wanderings have led them to make artworks as varied as their travels. Going back to the early eighties, Matthews had begun a practice of combining travel with making art when he rented a studio in Mexico. At the time he was struck by how much the change in surroundings and culture and light affected his work, and decided that it was a good thing to stir up the pot once in awhile. As a married couple, he and Crow maintain studios in both British Columbia and upstate New York and have painted in such far flung locales as the Himalayas, India, Tunisia, Sicily, Maui and Spain.

For them, the "Here" soon becomes "There", and this shifting of location and perspective and point of view plays out clearly in their work. Every time the suitcases get packed and unpacked, an old set of practices are unleashed in a new setting and the result, while familiar can feel like the other side of the world from the preceding work. "It's always unsettling" they say. "But I never feel like I'm in a rut".
