Great Bear Lake in the Balance

Great Bear Lake, the Sahtu

Vast clear pure deep

Hugging the Arctic Circle, the Precambrian Shield, the Mackenzie Basin, the Spirit Fish in its heart

Home to caribou, moose, musk ox, prize fish, gulls, loons, whiskey jacks....and to nomadic people for perhaps 6000 years, and to the Satudene now at Deline

Winter base camp for the likes of Franklin, Richardson, Rae and murderer-hunting RCMP

Mined for silver, cobalt, Enola Gay’s sickness-bringing uranium, and the souls of its inhabitants

Summer paradise for fishers, hunters, and, briefly, a fortunate artist like myself

Cris-crossed by float planes, jets, barges, ice roads and worried by oil exploration, pipelines, and politics, Great Bear Lake waits in the balance.
